"I wondered, for the first time in my life, if life was worth all the work it took to live. What exactly made it worth it? What's so horrible about being dead forever, and not feeling anything, and not even dreaming? What's so great about feeling and dreaming?"

Hundreds of years ago, the village relied solely on fishing. I have a book of paintings in my sitting room at home. One of the paintings has young women in aprons standing on cliffs watching a ship get smashed against the rocks. In the foreground is an arm of sunlight reaching down to the surface of the sea. I couldn’t tell you who painted the picture, but I understand the grief that makes such details necessary.
